About Pioneer Village
Built in 1930, Pioneer Village is America’s first living museum, It offers guided tours that give an in-depth look at the lives of early settlers. Designed by Joseph Everett Chandler and George Francis Dow, Pioneer Village started with 12 buildings and a replica of the Arbella, the ship that brought the Winthrop fleet to America. In 1954 the Arbella was damaged by Hurricane Carol and later burned by the city. Over 2,000 plants were added to make the area look like the natural landscape of the 1600s.
Today, Pioneer Village is managed by the City of Salem’s Witch House, which was also the 17th-century home of witch trials judge Jonathan Corwin.
