The Salem Custom House, built in 1819, is a historic federal-style building located on Derby Street in Salem, Massachusetts. Once a hub for maritime trade, it is most famous as the workplace of Nathaniel Hawthorne, who used it as the setting for the introduction to his novel The Scarlet Letter.
