Among the historic graves in Salem Massachusetts’ Charter Street Cemetery, the stones of Benjamin Felt and Elisabeth Felt stand out. The stone on the left commemorates “Mr. Benjamin Felt, who died March 1st A.D. 1769, aged 64 years.” Beside it, Elisabeth Felt’s gravestone reads: “In memory of Mrs. Elisabeth Felt, Relict of the late Capt. Benjamin Felt, who died Dec. 8th, 1789, in the 67th year of her age.” These markers, surrounded by autumn leaves, highlight the enduring history of Salem’s past residents.
