Super walkable. Like honestly, you don’t even need a car once you’re there. Every time we go, we just park once and walk everywhere the whole trip. The town’s not that big, and everything you want to see is pretty close together. You can walk from the Witch Museum to the Witch House to Essex Street in like five or ten minutes.
I’ve rode a bike around too, and that’s fun, especially early in the morning when it’s quiet. You can ride down by the water or through the neighborhoods with all the old houses, it feels like you’re in a movie. Just watch out for cobblestone spots and people walking everywhere during October, because the crowds can get wild and it’s hard to ride then.
Most of downtown is flat, so walking’s easy. You don’t have to deal with steep hills or anything like that. There are sidewalks everywhere, and a lot of streets are closed off to cars during Halloween season, which makes it even better for walking. You can just wander around with a coffee and pop into shops or museums whenever something catches your eye.
If you’re staying somewhere downtown, like The Salem Inn or Hotel Salem, you can literally walk out the door and be right in the middle of everything, restaurants, museums, tours, you name it. You can even walk to the train station if you’re coming from Boston.
The only time it’s tricky is when it’s raining or super crowded around Halloween weekend. Then it’s slow moving because everyone’s packed onto Essex Street, but it’s still manageable. Outside of October, walking around is chill and relaxing.
The answer to your question is, yes Downtown Salem is 100% walkable. You can explore the whole town on foot, and honestly that’s the best way to do it. You see all the little details, the old brick buildings, the hidden alleys, the cool signs, and you don’t have to stress about parking or traffic. I’d say bring comfy shoes, maybe rent a bike if you want to explore a bit further, and just enjoy it.
