What are the best museums to visit in Salem?

There’s actually a lot of good museums in Salem, and they all have their own feel to them. If it’s your first time, you gotta start with the Salem Witch Museum. It’s the one everyone goes to. They do this big storytelling act with lighting and old figures that walk you through what happened during the Witch Trials. It’s kind of dated but still really cool and gives you a good overview before you explore more.

There is the Peabody Essex Museum, which is huge and really modern compared to the others. It’s not just about witches, they’ve got art, paintings, artifacts unrelated to the trials, and a lot of other Salem history. It’s nice to walk around when you want a break from the spooky stuff. The building itself is super modern but still feels connected to the town’s history.

If you’re into horror and movie monsters, Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery is awesome. It’s like walking through a dark art exhibit of life sized horror characters from movies. The detail is unbelievably realistic, it’s one of my favorite places to visit and its relatively cheap. Just beware they do not allow any photography, which in away is good so nothing leaks onto the internet.

The Witch Dungeon Museum and Witch History Museum are fun too if you want more storytelling. They both have live reenactments and old school displays that show what the trials were like. They’re kind of touristy, but that’s all part of the experience.

An absolute must visit is The House of the Seven Gables. It’s technically more of a historic site than a museum, but it’s very much worth visiting. You can tour the house, go through hidden staircases, and learn about Nathaniel Hawthorne and the whole history behind it.

If you’re walking around downtown, you’ll see smaller museums too like The Salem Pirate Museum, which is good if you want something different from all the witch stuff. I actually really enjoyed this one. they have real pirate artifacts and treasure.

If you only have time for a few, I’d say do the Witch Museum, House of the Seven Gables, and Count Orlok’s for sure. Then if you have extra time, hit Witch Dungeon or Peabody Essex. You’ll get a mix of spooky, history, and just plain cool stuff all in one trip.
